Video and installation by Robert F. Hammerstiel
05.10.2012 - 28.10.2012 / Kunsthalle Faust

Robert F. Hammerstiel presents with the exhibition “Make Yourself at Home” several of his conceptual main works along with works especially developed for Kunsthalle Faust. With his programmatically titled works – e.g.:“Alles in bester Ordnung II / III / IV” and “What more do you want? II” – he relentlessly shows the visitor a promise of happiness made by contemporary consumption worlds, which is as bittersweet as absurd.

Citation Hammerstiel: “I deal with the human craving for felicity, security, idyll and thereby connected projections and wishes. In my work I scrutinise the depiction strategies of advertising and consumption industries. Industries who outthink, consistently regenerate, and stereotype those desires.”

Robert F. Hammerstiel is an eloborate juggler of trivial prosaicness and perfect imitation of the “natural”. In his videos, installations and works of photography he mirrors the social myth of an idyllic world and visualizes through their hyperbole definitions of consumption, enterainment or status. For instance by replacing everything natural with a synthetic surrogate.

The miraculous world of “want-to-have” is exaggerated. By this it is shown in its fragility and absurdity, as Hammerstiel lets automatic gardening robots scythe the artificial turf in Kunsthalle Faust. He makes the “standing in his/herselfs own way” of the visitor visible. The setting is supplemented by videos of idyllic familly-life, photographies of synthetic potted flowers as well as plastic houses.

This artificial world is contrasted by a video double projection in a smaller, darkend part of Kunsthalle Faust. Accompanied by the Bach cantata „Wie ein Hirsch nach frischer Quelle“ an infinite ludicrous camera ride along a real, perfectly looked after thujahedge is projected.
